Ravenclaws are often known for being quite eccentric and most of the great wizarding inventors and innovators have come from this house. If you are looking for the brainiest students – you would find them in Ravenclaw (with a couple of notable exceptions like Hermione Granger). The Ravenclaw colours are blue and bronze, the emblem is an eagle, the Head of House is Professor Filius Flitwick and the common room sits at the top of Ravenclaw Tower behind an enchanted knocker.
Leaving Hogwarts
If the Sorting Hat placed you in this noble house, then you are most likely ambitious, shrewd and possibly destined for greatness. We can imagine you’re the kind of person who is always one step ahead, has a dark sense of humour, thinks reputation is important, takes pride in their appearance and doesn’t let anyone see their soft side. Salazar Slytherin's wand, which had a core of Basilisk horn, could be shut down and rendered useless through Parseltongue - a carefully kept secret through his family. His wand is now buried in the grounds of Ilvermorny and a snakewood tree has grown out of the spot where it was buried, which has leaves with powerful medicinal magic. Salazar Slytherin was the founder of Slytherin house and one of the co-founders of Hogwarts, described as one of “the four greatest witches and wizards of the age” (along with the other three founders) (CS9). Overall, Slytherin is a great house for those who are ambitious, resourceful, and cunning.
1998 school year
In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the founder of the Slytherin house, the legendary story of Salazar Slytherin, and some famous Slytherins over the ages. So, if you want to learn everything there is to know about Slytherin, then keep reading. He seems mysterious and unfriendly to the other houses, but he is actually very kind to Slytherins and will usually agree to scare people for them if asked nicely. You can read more about the founders of Hogwarts or the wily old Sorting Hat and even your house ghost.

Horace Slughorn
She is fiercely protective of her family and, in the end, she chose to save Harry Potter’s life rather than give him to Voldemort just to find out if her son was safe. This act of defiance ultimately led to Harry’s survival and the defeat of Voldemort. Wife of Lucius Malfoy and mother to Draco, Narcissa is also a Slytherin.
Discover the symbolism behind each Hogwarts house
She is a pure-blood witch, also a descendent of the Black family line, and a Death Eater who was fiercely loyal to Voldemort. Regulus’s story is a reminder that even the people we think are evil can sometimes surprise us. They never give up on their goals and they are always moving forward. This determination is one of the things that makes Slytherins such excellent leaders.
What does your Hogwarts house mean?
And yes, we have traditionally tended to take students who come from long lines of witches and wizards, but nowadays you'll find plenty of people in Slytherin house who have at least one Muggle parent. Hufflepuff is where you will find the most trustworthy and hardworking students. In fact, out of all the houses Hufflepuff has produced the least number of dark witches and wizards. The badger is the symbol of this house, the colours are yellow and black, the Head of House is Professor Pomona Sprout and the common room can be found near the kitchens in Hogwarts. I don’t think this would ever have been the case, but Slytherin was biased towards pure blood wizardry and this was simply what he believed.
Naturally, this caused a lot of tension between Slytherin and the other three founders and eventually led to Slytherin leaving the school. I also think that being hungry for power isn’t particularly a good thing – there’s nothing wrong with being a natural leader, but chasing power just to feel powerful is a different story. Slytherin was a wizard who believed that only those with pure blood should be allowed to attend Hogwarts.

The Chamber of Secrets
However, Regulus eventually had a change of heart and realized that Voldemort was evil. He uncovered Voldemort’s secret, learned that he was creating Horcruxes to make himself immortal, and set about to destroy them. He found Slytherin’s locket, and stole it, leaving a copy in its place. Unfortunately, he died by the trap surrounding the Horcrux before he could destroy the locket.
Hufflepuffs are just the most humble of all the houses and don’t feel the need to shout about their achievements in the same way as the others. The traits of the house were considered obvious examples of people turning toward an ill purpose such as cunning and ambition, but they were not inherently negative. Furthermore, traits from the rest of the houses such as daring, intelligence, and loyalty could also become easily negative. Merlin was also a very powerful wizard and he was able to defeat many Dark Wizards during his lifetime.
It might also be possible (though quite unlikely) that the Sorting Hat simply sorted anyone with ill intentions into Slytherin, regardless of whether they possessed cunning and ambition, which helped to unfairly give this house a bad name. Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle were both incredibly stupid and did not have clever or cunning minds, but were still sorted into Slytherin. They could have possessed one of the minor traits as even Peter Pettigrew was not placed into Gryffindor for bravery, but for chivalry instead. Those characteristics included cunning, resourcefulness, leadership, and ambition.
You might have heard rumours about Slytherin house – that we’re all into the Dark Arts, and will only talk to you if your great-grandfather was a famous wizard, and rubbish like that. Well, you don't want to believe everything you hear from competing houses. I'm not denying that we’ve produced our share of Dark wizards, but so have the other three houses – they just don't like admitting it.

She’s literally the type of person who’s so easy to hate – I certainly hated her throughout the series. During her time as Headmistress of Hogwarts, she instituted many draconian rules and she tortured students who disobeyed her. I think that, despite all his wrongdoings throughout the books, he was never a truly evil person, and then the time cane, he proved that he wasn’t a killer. In my opinion, Draco is a true example of how a Slytherin can be both good and bad. Riddle eventually became Lord Voldemort and waged a bloody war against Dumbledore, the Order of the Phoenix, and basically, anyone who didn’t agree with him. He killed many innocent people in his quest for power, including Harry Potter’s parents.
You'll sleep well; it's very soothing, listening to the lake water lapping against the windows at night." The house colours for Slytherin are silver and emerald green and the emblem is a serpent. The Head of House is Professor Severus Snape, and the common room can be found down in the dungeons under the lake (which only adds to the Slytherin air of mystery).
Their rivalry was particularly the case during the First and Second Wizarding Wars. Many Slytherin students tended to clique together (often acquiring leaders) which further exemplified Slytherin's ambitious qualities. Examples of these included Draco Malfoy's gang, Merula Snyde's gang, Pansy Parkinson's gang and Tom Riddle's gang (which later became the Death Eaters). The Slytherin dormitories are located upstairs and they are said to be very comfortable. The beds have green silk sheets and the walls are covered in dark green velvet. The diary possessed Ginny Weasley, who opened the Chamber and released the Basilisk.
He believed that only pure-blood witches and wizards should be allowed to attend Hogwarts. He got into a disagreement with the other founders, especially Gryffindor, about this and eventually left the school. As well as blood purity, he also valued cunning and ambition in the students he selected for his house (PS7, GF12, OP11). I also believe that Slytherins have a bad reputation because of the number of witches and wizards that go bad that are from Slytherin.
He is still revered to this day as one of the most accomplished and powerful wizards of all time. Last but not least, Merlin, the acclaimed source, was actually a Slytherin. The most famous wizard of all time, Merlin was a master of magic and he accomplished many great things during his lifetime. Although she wasn’t a Death Eater and her cruelty was purely a lust for power, she still embodied many of the qualities and traits that make a dark wizard and ultimately, a very power-hungry Slytherin. Umbridge was a small, mousy woman with a sickeningly sweet voice. She was also incredibly cruel and she loved nothing more than to inflict pain on others.
